Wire, solid or polymer shelving?

Wire shelving allows airflow and light through, which matters in a cool room where warm spots cause spoilage, and it is far quicker to clean than a solid shelf that collects pooled liquid. Solid stainless shelving is the better choice where small items would fall through, where you want a wipeable surface, or in front-of-house areas where appearance counts.

Polymer shelving is the specialist option for cool rooms and wash-up areas: it will never rust, tolerates being pressure-washed and is often the lightest to reconfigure. It costs more per bay and carries less point load than heavy stainless.

Load, spacing and food safety compliance

Check the per-shelf load rating against your heaviest realistic case, not your average. A bay holding 20 L oil drums or bulk flour is carrying far more than most catalogue ratings assume when spread unevenly.

Keep the bottom shelf at least 150 mm off the floor so you can clean underneath — most Australian food safety inspections look for exactly this. Leave clearance above the top shelf for sprinkler coverage, and never store chemicals above food.

What to look for when buying

  • Measure the room, then plan bays around your box and container sizes.
  • Wire for cool rooms and airflow; solid stainless for wipeable prep storage.
  • Bottom shelf 150 mm minimum off the floor for cleaning access.
  • Check per-shelf load ratings against your heaviest stock, not the average.
  • Adjustable posts pay for themselves the first time your stock profile changes.

Who this range suits

  • Cool room and freezer storage
  • Dry goods and bulk ingredient stores
  • Chemical and cleaning cupboards (separated from food)
  • Under-bench and pass-through storage

Shelving — frequently asked questions

How high off the floor should kitchen shelving start?
Allow at least 150 mm clearance to the lowest shelf so floors can be cleaned and inspected underneath. This is a standard expectation in Australian food safety audits.
Will stainless shelving rust in a cool room?
Grade 304 stainless is highly corrosion resistant but is not immune where chlorides and standing moisture combine. Polymer shelving is the safest specification for permanently wet or heavily sanitised environments.
Can shelving be made to fit an awkward space?
Yes — we fabricate stainless shelving to measure, including corner runs and non-standard depths. Send us the dimensions and we will quote it.
